School & Gym, St.-Katherina-Lombeek, 2013-2017
IEA i.c.w. PLUSoffice
The primary school lies behind a cluster of buildings of public utility, right on the border between the village of Sint-Katherina-Lombeek and the adjoining countryside. Splitting the new program in two separate buildings on the edges of the site creates a new perspective for the site through the different entrances. At the same time, the school is introduced in a new relationship with the open space on the edges of the terrain.
The new buildings will drawn on archetypal images of rural building typologies. This principle is consistently implemented in roof form, construction method and materialization. The use of volumes with pitched roofs for gymnasium and classroom building also reduces the spatial impact of the new volumes and brings them to the scale of the existing buildings. The design also allows the visual and functional centrality of the existing monastery building in the middle of the school site to be maintained and strengthened.
